Imphal, the third in-country stealth destroyer of the Project 15B series to be commissioned by the Indian Navy later this year, made her first sea voyage today. The ship, which was designed internally by the Navy’s Warship Design Bureau and built by Mazagon Dock Ltd. (MDL), incorporates a number of specialised technologies and has a high percentage of indigenous materials. It is a proud testament to the Indian Navy’s focus on the national vision of “Aatma Nirbhar Bharat” and the “Make in India” initiative.
Imphal will hold the singular distinction of being the biggest and most sophisticated destroyer ever named after a North-Eastern city. Imphal will considerably improve the Indian Navy’s ability to engage in warfare. The beginning of Imphal’s sea trials is yet another significant milestone in MDL’s ongoing contribution to constructing a strong, modern, and independent India, following the recent commissioning of her predecessor INS Mormugao in December 2022 and the fifth Project 75 submarine INS Vagir in January 2023.
