On October 14, 2023, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully performed a medical evacuation of a Chinese crew aboard the Panama-flagged vessel MT Hua Wei 8 off the coast of Mumbai. Due to the tug’s unavailability, the vessel requested late on October 13, 2023, that a 49-year-old Chinese crew member be medically evacuated. This request was received by the ICG Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Mumbai, the maritime search and rescue coordinator on the Indian Western Coast.
According to reports, the crew had a stroke and hemiplegia. The ship was traveling from New Mangalore to Bin Qasim, Pakistan, and was 122 nautical miles from Mumbai when it decided to change course and proceed that way in order to get medical attention.
ICG ship C-439 was sent out for the patient’s medical evacuation due to the patient’s serious condition. in 0830 hours, ICG successfully evacuated the patient off the ship from Mumbai Anchorage in the midst of extremely poor visibility conditions, and he was thereafter disembarked in Mumbai harbor.
The patient was then given to the local representative at the Mumbai Port berth for additional medical attention ashore. This operation confirmed ICG’s dedication to marine safety in Indian waters once more.
