On June 28 and 29, 2023, Arusha hosted the second Joint Defence Cooperation Committee (JDCC) meeting between Tanzania and India. Senior representatives from the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces were part of the team from India, which was headed by Joint Secretary Shri Amitabh Prasad. Shri Binay S. Pradhan, the Indian High Commissioner to Tanzania, also attended the meeting.
The two parties discussed a variety of potential for cooperation with a view to boosting security in the Indian Ocean Region during the conference. The Indian delegation emphasised the expanding capacity of Indian defence production to export to friendly nations.The two sides also agreed on a five-year framework for defence cooperation, which includes projects like specialised training and capacity building, marine cooperation, infrastructure development, and cooperation in defence technologies and equipment.
The Indian delegation was also accompanied by representatives from Defence PSUs. On the sidelines of the JDCC meeting, they held extended discussions with the Tanzanian Forces stakeholders. Tanzania and India have tight, cordial, and friendly ties that are strengthened by robust capacity building and opportunities for development partnership. Tanzania’s defence relations with India are anticipated to get even stronger as a result of the Indian delegation’s presence for the JDCC meeting.
