The Indian Army held a “Environment Seminar” and a “Display cum Exhibition” at the Manekshaw Centre in Delhi Cantt on Monday to observe World Environment Day. The Indian Army’s military bases around the country began a series of environmental awareness initiatives and cleanliness drives in the third week of May 2023, which culminated in this key function.
Lieutenant General Rajinder Dewan, Quarter Master General of the Indian Army, Vice Admiral Sandeep Naithani, Chief of Material of the Indian Navy, Air Marshal RK Anand, Air Officer in Charge of Administration, and other senior officers from the three Services as well as Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff were present for the event, which was presided over by Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar, Vice Chief of Army Staff.
Eminent environmentalists spoke in a lecture titled “Olive Green-Defending Green” about important environmental topics such waste management, living sustainably, and building Net Zero homes and offices. The “force” behind Indore’s Solid Waste Management Model, Mr. Syed Asad Ali Warsi, delivered his knowledge and experiences on a “Integrated Approach to Solid Waste Management to Achieve Circular Economy.” Veteran IAS officer Dr. OP Agarwal clearly articulated the need for behavioural and cultural changes that are in line with a lifestyle that is kind to the environment. Major General SS Patil discussed his success story with the audience after conceptualising, organising, and implementing a “Zero Waste to Landfills” waste management programme at Udhampur Military Station. Eminent environmentalist Mrs. Radhika Anand offered workable and straightforward methods for creating “Net Zero Homes & Offices.”
In his concluding remarks, Lieutenant General MV Suchindra Kumar exhorted everyone to live an environmentally friendly lifestyle and separate garbage at the source. He reiterated the Indian Army’s ongoing commitment to decarbonization and sustainable growth. Green Magic in Urban Lifestyle, a concept of developing green areas within urban boundaries by volunteer Urban Gardeners of NCR, was displayed in a thematic “Display cum Exhibition.” The NTPC showcased green hydrogen and renewable energy technologies. The Eco-Territorial Army battalion of the Indian Army’s work on the Namami Gange project and the ecological recovery of the Himalaya was also highlighted in the exhibition.
