Twenty Bangladeshi fisherman were saved from the water by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Tuesday off Sagar Island, not far from the Indo-Bangladesh International Maritime Border Line (IMBL).
The Coast Guard Dornier aircraft on a surveillance sortie following the landfall of Cyclone “Sitrang” reportedly spotted approximately 20 people in capsized boats from a distance of 90 nautical miles from IMBL and alerted the search and rescue team, according to a statement from the defence ministry.
In order to support search and rescue operations and sanitise the region, the Coast Guard ships Vijaya, Varad, and C-426 were redirected. The ICG Ship Vijaya later took control of the 20 Bangladeshi fishermen. The statement claims that before being transferred to the Bangladesh Coast Guard, the fishermen underwent fitness checks by medical staff on board the ICG ship.
