Submarine INS Vagir of the Indian Navy (IN) is currently deployed over a longer distance. Vagir will arrive in Fremantle, Australia, on August 20, 2023, following the deployment, which began in June 2023. The submarine, which is the fifth of its kind in the Indian Navy’s Kalvari class, was commissioned into service in January 2023 and is headquartered in Mumbai.
INS Vagir will take part in a number of drills on Australia’s west coast with Royal Australian Navy (RAN) troops while she is there. Indian Naval ships and planes are taking part in Exercises MALABAR 23 from August 11 to 23 and AUSINDEX 23 from August 22 to 23 simultaneously on Australia’s east coast.
Basic, intermediate, and advanced Anti-Submarine exercises are planned for the current deployment. Additionally, an exercise with INS Vagir is planned with the RAN submarine and Indian Naval P8i aircraft. This deployment will strengthen IN and RAN’s collaboration and synergy even more. The continued deployment demonstrates the range and endurance of IN submarines. The extended range deployment, the first time an IN submarine has deployed to Australia, demonstrates IN’s competence and professional know-how to carry out sustained operations at extended ranges from the base port for lengthy periods of time. INS Vagir visited Colombo earlier in the deployment on June 23 as part of the International Day of Yoga.
