A proposal to extend the provisions for maternity, child care, and adoption leaves to women serving as air warriors, sailors, and soldiers in the armed forces on an equal footing with their officer counterparts has been approved by Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh. Following the release of the regulations, any women serving in the military, regardless of rank—including officers—will be eligible for these leaves.

The choice is consistent with the Raksha Mantri’s goal of allowing all women, regardless of rank, to participate equally in the Armed Forces. The expansion of leave regulations will be very helpful in addressing family and social difficulties that are unique to women and affect the Armed Forces. This measure is going to improve the work conditions of women in the military and aid them to balance the spheres of professional and family life in a better manner.

The three Services, led by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, have ushered in a paradigm shift by allowing women to serve as soldiers, sailors, and air warriors, hence advancing the government’s commitment to use Nari Shakti. With the recruitment of women Agniveers, the Armed Forces will be empowered with the bravery, dedication and patriotism of women soldiers, sailors and air warriors to defend the land, sea and air frontiers of the country.
Indian women are currently breaking limits in practically every field within the Armed Forces, from active deployment in Siachen, the highest battleground in the world, to postings aboard battleships and dominating the skies. The induction of women as troops in the Indian Army’s Corps of Military Police marked another important milestone in 2019. Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh has consistently believed that women ought to be on level with men in all fields.
