The United Kingdom and Japan will allow military forces to be deployed on each other’s territory, as Tokyo expands bilateral cooperation with other US allies in response to concerns about China’s rise.
During a meeting with his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida on Wednesday in London, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak signed a major defence agreement.
According to a UK government statement, the pact, the most significant of its kind between the two countries in more than a century, allows for the planning and delivery of larger, more complex military exercises.
“Signing this important security agreement takes Japan-UK cooperation in security and defence to new heights,” Japan’s foreign ministry said in a statement following the signing.

“It will also contribute to the realisation of a free and open Indo-Pacific,” the statement added.
According to the ministry, the agreement simplifies the procedures for port visits and joint exercises, allowing for more active exchanges.
In other development, the United States and Japan unveiled plans Wednesday to strengthen their alliance in order to counter threats from North Korea and China, which they described as the region’s greatest security challenge.
The US and Japanese foreign and defence ministers condemned China’s growing assertiveness in the Indo-Pacific and elsewhere, as well as Russia’s war in Ukraine, in unusually blunt terms.
