India responds UK Minister’s ‘Indian transients outstay’ comment

India responded to UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman’s comment that branded Indians because the “largest group of people who overstay” their visas within the UK. The Indian High Commission within the UK stated that India had initiated motion on all circumstances raised with it underneath the Migration and Mobility Partnership (MMP).

The High Commission launched a press release saying, As a part of our wider discussions underneath Migration and Mobility, the federal government of India is dedicated to working with the federal government of the UK to facilitate the return of Indian residents who’ve overstayed their visa interval right here within the UK.

“As per the data shared with the Home Office, as of date, action has been initiated on all of the cases referred to the High Commission. Further, the UK has also undertaken to fulfil certain commitments as part of the Migration and Mobility Protocol, on which we await demonstrable progress,” it added.

Suella Braverman, an Indian-origin British minister, made the comment in an interview for the British weekly journal ‘The Spectator’. She additionally stated she had “concerns” over the proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with India.She expressed issues over the proposed pact on the grounds that it might improve immigration to the UK.

“I have concerns about having an open borders migration policy with India because I don’t think that’s what people voted for with Brexit,” Braverman advised ‘The Spectator’.

Meanwhile, Arindam Bagchi, the spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that there’s curiosity on each side to conclude the free commerce settlement on the earliest.India and the UK are finishing up intensive discussions for a free commerce settlement as each side are eager to conclude it on the earliest, he stated.
