Today in Dhaka, the Indian High Commission commemorated the 51st anniversary of Maitri Diwas. Ten days prior to Bangladesh’s liberation, on this day in 1971, India acknowledged a free and independent Bangladesh.
Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Sheikh Hasina decided to observe Maitri Diwas on December 6 during PM Modi’s state visit to Bangladesh in March 2021.
The Indian High Commission in Dhaka organised a reception and musical event to commemorate the event. AKM Mozammel Haque, the Minister for Liberation War Affairs, attended as the main guest.
Along with many Muktijoddhas, prominent government officials, business and industry executives, members of the media, academics, and members of civil society attended the celebrations.
Speaking to the crowd, High Commissioner Pranay Verma emphasised the importance of the day as a chance to consider the successes of the last 51 years of India-Bangladesh cooperation as well as the prospects for the future.
He described India-Bangladesh friendship as rooted in the shared sacrifices of 1971 and fostered by strong ties of history, language and culture. Noting that both countries have made important achievements in the last 50 years, he emphasized that the countries must ensure that their future generations understand this history and preserve the legacy of 1971.
He reaffirmed that India gives its relationship with Bangladesh the utmost priority and that it will always be ready to walk alongside the Bangladeshi people on the path to greater development and success.
The celebrations came to a close with vibrant performances by the Indian and Bangladeshi cultural troupes, reiterating the two nations’ joint determination to further fortify their close friendship built on shared values, culture, and ethos and based on mutual trust, respect, and understanding.
