In retaliation for a drone attack by Ukraine on Moscow’s fleet in Crimea, Russia launched precise strikes against Ukraine’s infrastructure on Monday, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
At a press conference on Monday, Putin claimed Ukraine had militarily abused UN grain programme security corridors that were meant to be used to transport food grains around the world. Kyiv had declined to take credit for the strike.
In order to guarantee a continuous supply of food grains from Russia and Ukraine to the globe across the Black Sea, the UN and Turkey had in July negotiated a grain transportation programme with Russia and Ukraine, with Russia benefiting from the safe transit.
After the attack on its fleet in Crimea, Russia halted grain exports to the Black Sea and pounded the Ukrainian territory with missile attacks, knocking out electricity to roughly 140,000 people, including 50,000 people in Kharkiv city, according to Ukrainian officials.
The military of Ukraine claimed to have intercepted 44 out of 50 Russian missiles. However, according to authorities, 80 percent of Kyiv is currently without running water. According to Ukrainian authorities, the most recent attacks left 13 people injured, according to Reuters.
Moscow’s move to back out of the UN-mediated agreement caused a more than 5% increase in wheat prices worldwide. However, the continued transfer of grains from Ukraine on Monday seems to indicate that the current food crisis has passed.
