US bioweapons investigation, Russian proposal for Ukraine at UN fails

On November 2, Russia was unable to persuade the UN Security Council to launch a formal investigation into its charge that the US and Ukraine have biological weapons programmes in Ukraine, a charge that both Washington and Kiev refute.

Only China and Russia voted in favour of the proposal for a Security Council resolution. The remaining 10 council members did not vote; instead, the United States, Britain, and France did.

U.N. disarmament officials have long said they are not aware of any biological weapons programs in Ukraine.

Since Russian forces invaded Ukraine on February 24, Russia has brought up the topic of chemical and biological weapons in Ukraine multiple times in the U.N. Security Council. Russia’s charges have been dismissed by the United States and Ukraine.

Russia has come under fire from the United States and its allies for wasting council time and promoting conspiracies.
