According to the defence ministry, Romania’s military detonated a naval mine that had strayed close to the nation’s Black Sea coastline late on Sunday.
Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, mines started to float in the Black Sea, and military diving teams from Romania, Bulgaria, and Turkey have been disarming those that have been drifting in their seas.
Both Russia and Ukraine claim the other planted them.
For the transportation of grain, oil, and oil products, the Black Sea is essential.
Along with Ukraine and Russia, it is bordered by Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, and Turkey.
The mine that was defused on Sunday, the second one the Romanian military has dealt with since March, was reportedly drifting about two nautical miles off the country’s coast.
The supply chains and merchant ships are at risk from the errant mines.
On oil ships travelling across the Black Sea, insurance prices have skyrocketed.
Due to the hazards associated with the war in Ukraine, including the possibility of mines being found in the area’s seas, a new offshore gas platform in the Black Sea of Romania that started functioning in June had to be launched without insurance.
