US To Provide Ukraine With Its Most Advanced Air Defence System ‘Patriot’

The US is finalising plans to send a Patriot missile defence system to Ukraine, US officials told Reuters on Tuesday.

US President Joe Biden and Defence Secretary Llyod Austin for formal approval are currently reviewing the plans.

Patriot is a ground-air defence system designed by Raytheon Technology Corp to intercept incoming missiles. It is one of the world’s most sought-after and sophisticated US air defence systems.

It is typically used against advanced missile threats such as a cruise or ballistic missiles with radars.

Ukraine has requested air defence systems from its Western allies to protect its energy infrastructure from Russian attacks.

Despite Russia’s warning, the United States and its allies have continued to send air defences in response to Russia’s recent surge in missiles in Ukraine. The US is providing Ukraine with all defence equipment, not just Patriot.

Washington has not confirmed any details, such as the Patriot’s range or use. On the other hand, the US has limited the use of High Mobility Artillery Rocket (HIMARS) launchers in Ukraine.

According to Ukrainian officials, troops will be sent to Germany for months of training. On February 24, Moscow launched a “special military operation” in Ukraine. Until now, the United States has provided nearly USD 19.3 billion in military aid to Ukraine.
