In order to take part in a bilateral Naval Maritime Partnership Exercise with the UAE Navy, two Indian naval ships—INS Visakhapatnam and INS Trikand—commanded by Rear Admiral Vineet McCarty, Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, landed to Port Rashid in Dubai on August 8, 2023.

The two fleets performed the bilateral Maritime Partnership Exercise today following two days of careful planning. The exercise’s goal was to improve the interoperability and synergy between the two navies by cross-training on tactics, techniques, and procedures while forging closer professional ties.

At Abu Dhabi Naval Command, Rear Admiral McCarty had a meeting with Brigadier Abdullah Farj Al Mehairbi, the Deputy Commander of the UAE Naval Forces. In order to cooperatively address the challenges of piracy, smuggling, and human trafficking, improve maritime security, and engage in combined humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, should the need arise, they agreed to increase communication between the two Navies.

The Admiral also met with H.E. Shri Sunjay Sudhir, the Indian Ambassador to the UAE, and provided him with an update on the nature and timing of the exercise as well as the future plans for India and the UAE’s Navy to Navy cooperation.

The ambassador emphasized that the fact that these two ships were there for the naval exercise is a sign of our expanding defense ties with the UAE, which are being shaped by the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between our nations.

INS Visakhapatnam is one of the largest operating destroyers in the Indian Navy and was built entirely domestically by the Mazagaon Docks Limited. It is commanded by Captain Ashok Rao. Advance stealth frigate NS Trikand, led by Captain Pramod G Thomas, was launched in 2013. Modern technology has been incorporated into every aspect of the ship’s design to make her stable, stealthier, swift, and formidable.
