The Indian Coast Guard and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on strengthened maritime cooperation, marking a significant step towards enhancing bilateral collaboration between India and the Philippines. On August 22, 2023, at the Coast Guard Headquarters in New Delhi, DG Rakesh Pal, Director General of the Indian Coast Guard, and CG Admiral Artemio M. Abu, Commandant, signed the Memorandum of Understanding. The first bilateral discussion between the two parties on a variety of maritime issues.

The Memorandum of Understanding signed today aims to strengthen the professional ties between the two Coast Guards in the areas of marine pollution response (MPR), maritime search and rescue (M-SAR), and maritime law enforcement (MLE). The implementation of this MoU will improve the two countries’ bilateral maritime cooperation for maintaining the region’s seas as safe, secure, and clean as possible.The first-ever meeting between the two maritime organizations shows a commitment to developing training cooperation, conducting joint exercises, and exchanging best practices in order to deepen professional ties.

From August 20–24, 2023, a five-person PCG team will be touring India on official business. The group had previously visited Goa on August 21 and had seen the operating capabilities of the ships and aircraft operated by the Indian Coast Guard as part of “Atmanirbhar Bharat.” The delegation also received a customer demonstration fly aboard the Indian Coast Guard Advance Light Helicopter MK-III while they were in town. The participants also went to the Goa Shipyard Limited-built Indian Coast Guard Ship Sujeet.
